Round 4 of the Autobacs SuperGT series was held at the Sepang Circuit, located near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Sepang track is approxmiately 5.5km's long and this event would see the 20+ GT300 drivers doing 35 laps to the finishline!
With ambient temperatures sittign round the 30degree mark the day was considered to be on the cooler side for this time of year. The Impreza GT300 has gone under the knife once more in an effort to improve aerodynamics and to decrease the weight. It now sports carbon fibre bonnet, boot lid, and fenders. So the minor collisions of the previous round @ Fuji were turned into positive ones. Despite the penalties and collisions both drivers and the mechanical team were very excited to see the new Impreza GT300 hit the track on day one. Kota Sasaki marked the teams presence by recording the top times (2'08.850) since qualifying, as he was already familiar with the track due to particiation in another event. Both Yamano and Sasaki say: 'our goal is to win in the Impreza. Pole position is merely a point along the way. If we win here we are going to go for the championship'. With minimal time spent in the pits Yamano was able to maintain pole position until the driver change. With Sasaki behind the wheel, his attention was now focused on broadening the gap to those behind him to a minimum of 15seconds. This plan of attack paid off as the pair took poll position, a rewarding vistory for the drivers and mechanical team. This was the first win in 10 years for the Impreza too, as well as the first SuperGT win for an All Wheel Drive (AWD) car. Last update: 21-07-2008 10:25
