 SS1 / 4 Ruwertal / Fell (21.22km)
This stage is very similar to last year, but with 200metres new at the start which is nothing. The rally begins in the vineyard region, and like most this stage is narrow and dirty with lots of gravel by the side of the road. We switch a lot from main roads to side roads and back again so there is a real difference in grip and character, especially as sometimes it’s really old and shiny tarmac and sometimes it’s new. We finish on a 1.4km new section that’s been added to last year’s stage, which is basically flat out straight up a hill. It’s a cracking opening stage, really good.

 The Subaru World Rally Team entry of Chris Atkinson and Stéphane Prévot clinched a crucial third place on Rally Finland with a resolute fight-back after they slipped to ninth position on the opening day.  Chris Atkinson and co-driver Stéphane Prévot have finished the second and longest day of Rally Finland by decisively snatching third position in the final stage of the day after a very strong performance punctuated by a raft of top three stage times. Petter Solberg and Phil Mills also had a positive day to consolidate sixth, feeling more comfortable with their Impreza WRC2008.
